I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED TO MY horse after ensuring Avalon was recovering as much as guaranteeing I had chased away the man I do not trust to be left alone with her, or Greer for that matter. Although from what I have witnessed, I am left with only one conclusion… these two have spent a significant amount of time with one another since our departure. I suppose if this is the mortal Greer has chosen to spend her time with, I should not interfere. Avalon is a different story. One too many times, this son of Adam has made comments I do not appreciate. Disparaging remarks that all focus on the lamb’s task.

Rather than following logic or exercising discretion, I chose to stay with Greer. She asked about Avalon and my travels, and I responded with what details I was able to provide her. Thankfully, she did not push the issues further than I could discuss.

I should have left when her eyes grew heavy and her body curled against mine. Perhaps I would have if not for delighting in the feel of her skin or the intoxicating scent surrounding me.

I should have left when her head slid down to lie on my lap; instead, I watched her sleep. Fascinated by the soft sighs and quiet murmurs as she adjusted her head until she was comfortable and content.

I should have done many things, yet I did none.

My mind attempted to rationalize as I told myself it was only done so I could protect Avalon as she fought off the infection trying to overtake her. I deemed it imperative for someone to stand watch, and since Greer had fallen asleep, it left only me.

Yet the truth is, while I wanted to assure the lamb’s well-being, the real reason was the woman slumbering against me. It does not matter if my time with her is while she sleeps. Spending time with Greer is the true reason I remain. I despise that Avalon knew my desire long before I did and maintained her stance regarding how I felt about this woman even as I refused to admit it. Of course, I have no intention of telling her any of this. My reason for this is she will never allow me to forget it.

Nor do I intend to admit any of this to Greer.

She has a life, a child… a man. Things I am not capable of providing. What could I ever give her besides rot, disease, and death. Nothing. This is why I will hold my tongue and promise that after tonight I shall return to being nothing more than a rider here for their end as she returns to being nothing more than a wish. But tonight… only for tonight, I will permit myself to enjoy the feel of her against me, the sweet aroma of her surrounding me, and the soft sighs of contentment she offers me while she sleeps comfortably on my lap.
